Healing a Jealous Heart

Have you ever experienced jealousy that caused damage to a relationship? Jealousy can damage a relationship from either side. If you are jealous of someone, you are actually covetous of what they have, which is something that will eat you up inside if you let it. On the other hand, if someone is jealous of you, that can come out overtly or covertly in the way the person communicates to you.

So why, if we know we have a loving God, who is our father and Christ His son, who loves us beyond measure and wants to provide everything for us, do we even look at what someone else has? In my study of this question, I looked at Deuteronomy 5 to see where God tells Moses about “Do not covet.” Essentially God gives Moses the commandment for the Isrealites, then in chapter 6 He tells Moses why they should follow the law and the commandments . . . so they can live a fulfilled life.

Deuteronomy 5:21

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Deuteronomy 6:1-2

“This is the commandment, the rules and regulations, that God, your God, commanded me to teach you to live out in the land you’re about to cross into to possess. This is so that you’ll live in deep reverence before God lifelong, observing all his rules and regulations that I’m commanding you, you and your children and your grandchildren, living good long lives.”

As born-again Christians, we even have the fulfillment of the law in Christ. So, why do we still covet? It could be a remnant of rebelliousness to God telling us not to. In Romans 7, Paul talks about this whole issue, which I will not explore here.

If you do find yourself with a covetous or jealous heart, ask God to help you stop feeling that way. And, if you feel it rising up in you, stop, and start thanking God for every blessing, no matter how small, that He has given you. You will find healing in relationships, when you decide not to be jealous. You will find freedom!
