Season of Advent

Several weeks ago Pastor Brady Boyd of New Life Church in Colorado Springs (@pastorbrady) spoke at our church. He mentioned that it was the first Sunday in Advent and that Advent is a season of preparing for the return of Christ.

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Advent is far more than simply marking a 2,000 year-old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, and how we are redeemed by His son Jesus.

So I set out an Advent wreath with four candles, each representing one of the weeks of Advent. I had always thought of Advent as preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, yet never thought so much about His second advent. Somehow the quiet of the morning and the gentle flame of the candles have gotten me to slow down a bit and focus on what is really important about life. That is to be obedient to the Lord in all that I do, to constantly seek Him, to share His grace and relish in His glory.

This week I read a passage in Isaiah that helped me keep the right attitude, walking with Him daily.

“Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily. And your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.”

Isaiah 58:8

I encourage you to think about putting righteousness in Christ before you and allowing His glory to be your rear guard. The thought of it makes me think of a shield that helps us stay focused on Him no matter how challenging the circumstances around us.
